New M&A activity on the GPS market after the purchase of Navman by Mitac in 2007, of TeleAtlas by TomTom in 2008 and of Magellan by Mitac at the end of 2008 with the announcement today that Garmin was buying Navigon.
While both companies appear to complement each other well : strong US presence for Garmin, European for Navigon, strong road/handheld/sports GPS systems for Garmin, Smartphone (Apple iOS and Google Android) and a foothold in the OEM car market for Navigon, it remains to be seen how they will operate in the long run. In the meantime Navigon will operate as a subsidiary of Garmin.
